Do you want to “..get rid of pain,want to be able to go to the shops, sit for dinner, watch kids sport without pain..”?
We don’t ask for much – we just want to function day to day and feel normal. For many of us pain has become normal and we cant remember when we were last ‘painfree” or made it through the night without waking in pain.
With every episode of pain we have our body does its best to try and compensate. Our muscles spasm and get tight to “hold us still” so we don’t move the sore spot. This restricts our ability to move and also over time causes the joints to get stiff and tight too. Eventually we end up not moving well, feeling like we’re 90 and unable to function well as everything hurts!
The pain we now have is not that of our acute episode where everything was inflamed and irritated – this pain is what we could call “dysfunction”. The tissues have nothing to see different on X-ray or scans but we get severe pain. In these cases the pain is caused by POOR FUNCTION.
Tissues become stiff, tight, weak and in spasm. The longer we leave it – the worse it gets, and it WONT get any better unless you do something specific about it.
This is the first thing to go. You “core” is actually quite complex. Its a combination of deep muscles with your pelvic floor and breathing that all need to work together to keep your centre strong. This is the work of support that the deep muscles do allowing your poor over worked back muscles to just do their job – which is to MOVE you – not SUPPORT you.
So if you are thinking about getting “a stronger core” – great news – you’re headed in the right direction!
How to get a stronger core
Now this is the bit where the problems start. If you don’t know what you’re doing you are leaving yourself open for problems. Pain is the body’s way of saying – I don’t like what you’re doing – STOP.
Your body is worried about getting more hurt and it tries to prevent you from moving.
MOVEMENT SHOULD BE PAIN FREE AND EFFORTLESS! There is absolutely NO WAY you can begin to strengthen your core and get moving into any sort of function unless your body can relax and ALLOW you to do so.
I tried a class of Pilates and some planks but it still hurts…
We hear this a lot. Clients have been told or hear its good to get core strength – and yes that’s what you need to do. But if you have had long standing problems – you cannot do this alone. You need help and guidance to make sure you are doing the right thing – its like trying to fix a car but not knowing where to start…so you tinker with this and that, no real direction and give up.
Moving should be pain free – and to move pain free you need to know :
- what muscles are over working so you can relax them
- what muscles are weak so you can strengthen them
- what muscles are tight so you can stretch them
- what muscles don’t function at all so you can re -activate them
- what joints are stiff so you can free them up
- what your posture is doing so you can address it
- whether what you are doing is effective
- whether what you are doing could cause more problems
If you don’t have access to ALL that information you will fail. You will either be ineffective or you will give up because you will feel no change.
This is why going to the gym, or doing a group class, or starting a new personal training program doesn’t work..IT’S NOT SPECIFIC TO YOU AND YOU HAVEN’T HAD THE REQUIRED EXPERT ADVISE TO MAKE IT SPECIFIC.
