What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the nineteen twenties. It has since evolved into an exercise based system to promote and enhance core stability of the spine, improve range of motion and correct faulty movement patterns and posture.
Who is Pilates for?
Pilates is suitable for everyone and can accommodate all ages, abilities and levels. Pilates is a flexible system that can be tailored to individual needs making it easily adapted to both the clinical and fitness/lifestyle setting.
Pilates is primarily offered in either studio or floor/mat work format.
Comprises the use of the specialised Pilates equipment such as the reformer, trapeze table, wunda chair and ladder barrel. The equipment allows the breakdown of functional and specific movement patterns so allowing us to isolate and work muscles specifically within any given range.
As we are clinical based we can also incorporate traditional physiotherapy techniques within the session such as muscle release, joint and soft tissue mobilisations and manipulations as indicated.
All sessions are one hour and can be done on either a private basis or a semi-private basis whereby there may be up to three clients in at a time during the hour – each of you working on your own specific program.
Is a more generalised way of working with a group format of up to 8 on a floor based program for physio led classes or 12 for instructor led casses. Classes are graded according to ability or prior experience with Pilates and may utilise small equipment such as the magic circle, foam roller, resistance band or fit balls to add challenge and variety to exercise.
The exercises can be modified to suit the individual as required.
An initial assessment is required prior to attending physio classes to ensure we have correctly assessed clients for any contra-indications to exercises and this also allows us to ensure we can modify the class accordingly as necessary.
The initial assessment will look at posture, muscle / motor control and imbalance, musculoskeletal pain or dysfunction, core control and stability.
Instructor led classes require attendance at our Introduction to Pilates Mat class.
If you require a specific program for your given sport or work then special groups can be accommodated on request. We can tailor make a program for you designed to improve your performance ability for your given situation.
