Does Fear of Pain Stop You Moving?

Fear and fear of getting worse pain stops many people moving. How Clinical Pilates can help.

If you are worried and anxious about moving anyway, and you have had worsening pain when you do move, it a vicious cycle.

Pain and fear can be crippling. You lose trust and faith in your body and yourself, and you become withdrawn from society. any feel no one ‘gets them’ – there s nothing outward to see. You look fine. It’s just the amount of pain and how that affects you and that is ‘unseen’.

The thing is – you DO NEED TO MOVE. And whilst that’s scary, it’s the HOW TO START that most people get wrong or hung up on.

Take learning to walk. It doesn’t just happen. We start with rolling over, move to crawling, then pulling ourselves up on furniture and eventually we get to walk. It takes time, it tales trial and error. it takes learning.

Your body now is no different. You know, your body knows, and your brain know – it all hurts.

It’s had learning patterns drilled in for a longtime now that it you move it hurts. So why move.

Fear and avoidance of pain, so avoidance of moving is now ‘safe’. Moving is now ‘bad’.

That’s what we have to address first. You need to move knowing it is pain free, and knowing it is safe for your body to start to actually MOVE again!

This is where people get everything wrong most of the time. Doctors and most people know you need strong muscles and most know they want a good core…. but going from doing nothing to boot camp,or into a ‘group class’ situation means you are not getting the steps in place you need. It’s like being that baby who can roll over and then expecting to run and wondering why you fail. You’re missing out on a few key steps.

Lets talk about just getting out of a chair.

If your back hurts you – getting out of a chair – how are you expecting it not to hurt doing step ups, crunches, planks?

Clinical Pilates works.

It works because we know what ground work needs to be laid to get your body and muscles and brain connecting in the right way so you have a positive movement experience.

Lets go back to sitting and standing – if you get pain when you get up from a chair…. you will adjust what you do. You will not be able to get the right muscles working – your body knows you’re getting up from a chair and it know what it needs to do. We need to break that down and re train it.

Here’s how:

Here – See in the picture below – I am ling on my back, my knees are at 90 degrees – my back is fully supported. I can use my legs to press away from the bar until my legs go straight .

I can rest my back in a ‘good position’ and there is no load on my spine as I have no weight going through it.

As I straighten my legs and press out you can see I and effectively going from ‘sitting to standing’.

My brain and my body however do not object as they don’t recognise it as the normal way to do it – I’m lying down therefore ‘tricking’ my body into doing the same movement but in a way that it feels safe and pain free. There is no weight on my back, I’m not using painful muscles to do it, my spine muscles are relaxed so not taking over and causing pain.

What i am using is the RIGHT muscles – my legs, my abs, my support posture muscles of my core, but best of all – I’m strengthening those muscles and re training my body to move – PAIN FREE.

This is how we work, This is how we get great results.

The body wont just ‘work’. You need to invest time and training and get to understand that years of poor movement, fear of moving and poor patterns of movement generally need a bit more than boot camp, or massage or group class work.

You need to re train muscles that  have forgotten how to move.

You need to re program your brain that moving is good

You need to let go of fear and trust that we have your back

And that’s the hard part – Fear and Trust

Especially if you have place that trust in someone or something and been disappointed.

Trust people who KNOW what they are doing.

We have helped 100’s of people get their life back, because we start from where you need to start, and sometimes that can be way back, just learning to lie comfortably! You need to start where you need to start.

Planks  are generally the end game – and many never get there – and that’s OK.

Your goal is your goal. We just get you there or as close to there in the best and safest way possible – that gives you a lasting outcome that you can sustain and maintain at home yourself.

We do one hour appointments for your initial consult because we need that time for you to really find out what’s going on. That cant be done in 30 mins and get that explained and get you understanding it too.
