Back Pain sucks.
Most just wanna know what to do to fix it – and Fast.
Thing is when we have back pain we know we need to do something – and there’s a myriad of things that are suggested to get better, from rest, to injections, to surgery,to exercise, to movement, to core work,to massage, to strength training, to giving up sport, give up aggravating activity, change you job, improve your posture… see a chiro/ physio/ osteo… and the list goes on – of and don’t forget the best one of all – I had that you should do this AKA – Dr Google!
And listen – I get it.
We get back pain, it either goes away and becomes self limiting and we forget about it until it strikes again, or we end up in the cycle of lower grade constant pain with increasingly regular episodes of worsening pain “for no reason”.
What typically happens that I see is clients get back pain. They either ‘put up with it and wait to see if it goes away – or they come and ask for help and say – I’ll just see how it goes”
Inevitably they have 2 outcomes – they are great and all went well – and they are back to their normal self, or it had a impact and has changed how they now live and function.
And it may be just a small change first… they stop playing sport. Cricket, footy, netball, basketball, running, gum work – all ‘irritate’ and make it worse – so they stop.
The Doctor you see may also advise that – rest from stuff that hurts you. And so you do.
It’s more important at this stage that you function for you family and work, so kicking sport and exercise to the kerb isn’t such a big deal.
But what’s happening is you;r eon that slippery slope…..you’re no longer moving your body and that means no longer using muscles, no longer stretching and getting some activity in joints and that bit in your spine where it was painful – well that is just staying stuck – no t moving, allowing the joint stiffen and muscles to get weak and go into spasm and get ‘tight’.
Now when you feel happy and you’re actual pain subsides – you feel ready to go back to doing what you were doing – normally around the 6-12 week mark after pain hit – only now you;ve had 2-3 month of inactivity and your body doesn’t respond the way it did.
Sport/ exercise/ activity may actually now hurt – your body is stiff, weaker and may actually cause you pain when you try and move it – now this pain may not be from the original problem, but from the fact all those tissues are now weak, stiff and not moving as well as they used to – so they get sore.
So you take a little longer break and try again – by this time you may be weaker and more stiff and may get the same reaction – so you decide to do something different.
Some decide boot camp – they think their core is weak ( and it is ) and boot camp is a good way to fix it. In my experience boot camp is high level, high intensity, high load – and expects a decent baseline level of core strength as the core work done there is high level advanced ( yep – planking is advanced core work people)… and again you get sore and cant go beyond a certain level -your back hurts and you end up in pain.
So you think exercise makes me worse/ core work and strength work make me worse I’ve tried that – its no good.
They we give up everything – and maybe have a couple of more goes every so often and the pattern is re -enforced.
Problem – you have a weak core, stiff joints, muscles in spasm, lack flexibility and therefore rely on your big back muscles. when you then over load or even just load these with activity – they can’t cope because they are already working too hard – so you get pain – so you think ALL exercise is a no go.
THIS IS WHERE YOU NEED EXPERT HELP – you need someone to guide you and get you going and get you started in the right track.
You need to know
- what your pain is coming from ( that way you can address it properly)
- what muscles are working and not working ( so you don’t over load the muscles that work for you and you strengthen the muscles that are weak)
- what your posture/ core muscles are doing or not doing – IT TAKES EXPERT KNOWLEDGE to assess your core strength – it snot just can you hold a plank – it’s about stability and control for your core more so than abs strength
- what your posture type is – if how you hold yourself is causing pressure – how will it ever change – again this takes an EXPERT EYE to see what’s going on
- what your original issue was and what’s giving you pain now – most say “i have a disc/ facet joint problem” – well you did back when it was sore – but you may not now – so modifying things for a disc issue that was there 2 years ago may not be what’s causing pain now – it may be stiff joint s and a weak core – which is completely different management to a disc issue.
Chronic back pain management is complex in how you go about managing it – and there are multiple factors that you need to consider – most people tackle one and wonder why they don’t get results.
It’s like trying to bake a cake and constantly missing out key ingredients and wondering why it never works.
You need ALL of the ingredients, in the right order and the right stage to get effective management.
PLUS – you’re desire to get there and put in the work to undo what you think, how you move and how you manage your back.
And it’s a process.
But I can safely say after 25 years of managing people in pain – spending time with them to really get them to understand what is going on and how much influence they can have on their pain by realising what they are doing and how that can affect what level of discomfort they feel is amazing.
Most haven’t used that approach before – but its what gets us our results and it’s why we are so effective in our management.
If you do what we ask – you’ll get results – because we address ALL the angles, ALL the factors to give you a complete management plan that will work.
What will it take for you to step up to the plate?
The longer you leave it the harder it is to get right.
Pain you’ve had for years doesn’t just miraculously vanish – and expecting it to in 2 weeks and without effort and change on your part is ludicrous….. whilst we can get pain levels down within two weeks – it will take at least 3 months for your body and tissue and muscles to get that LASTING change going – even if you feel heaps better!
