Posture CAN cause Pain

There’s a big debate in the physio world at the moment about posture.

Whether there is good posture, bad posture. Whether we should be correcting people or advising they change their posture…

Thing is posture is not a problem – whether you have good or bad posture – until it is a problem and causes pain.

So my humble 2 cents worth… Yes – posture CAN cause pain.

I am old school – I grew up when we had to stand up straight, chest out, shoulders back. We were taught not to lean on our elbows at the dining table, you had to eat at the table – not in front of the TV. At school we couldn’t write with our elbows on the table, we were taught to sit back in chairs and feet flat on the floor.

My mother was a catwalk model and made us go up and down stairs with two books on our head.

Thing is – I grew up VERY AWARE of posture – I was aware of slouching, sitting up straight, good posture v bad posture – because I was taught it.

As a young physio – I can safely say it was RARE to see a kid or teenager with pain, tight hamstrings or lacking flexibility. Everyone MOVED well. They may not have all been good at what they did, or super apt- but we all knew how to just move – because tats what play time and out side of school was. Sure you still had bookworms, and the quiet reserved kids, but we all moved.

These days I can SEE the difference. And maybe its because I’m older and wiser, but we see kids and teens and tight hamstrings, and injuries and back pain really frequently… and it really scary.

People are just NOT MOVING.

So do i think posture is a problem- hell yes.

Its a problem because we don’t think it’s a problem.

My kids are so fed up of me complaining and asking them to sit on you sit bones… Not your sacrum… I have no idea how they can sit in so much flexion that they sit actually on their sacrum and not their pelvis… to the point they cant even make neutral pelvis.

Is this painful for them – no. Do they get back pain – no. are they concerned – no.

Can they kick in swimming – my younger one – no – his hips and hip flexors are so tight he can streamline properly as are his pecs and lats. He cant run fast because he cant get adequate hip extension.

He isn’t in pain – it doesn’t bother him – he just thinks he’s not a good and strong as his brother.

The older on – he’s hyper mobile to the max – so that freaks me out no end – but he is also hyper active to the max – so although he is limited in his extension range and sit in neutral – everything else works well due to hyper mobility – is he is pain? – all the time due to his joint pain and he has learnt if he sits still or stays still everything hurts – so he moves CONSTANTLY cos when he stops he gets really sore.

So – what does that tell me – our kids today are really less mobile and strong and agile then they used to be and are putting it down to just not being good at things— where I think they just don’t have that learning, experience of moving as a young kid, they sit more and look at gaming and social media more.

Speaking to teachers – they are concerned about the lack of co-ordination, lack of co-ordination skills and poor hand eye control.

So does Posture cause pain – in my opinion most definitely…. and my main concern is that I can see the shift in the lack of mobility, agility and general strength in the kids these days…. that for some reason is now being seen as normal.
